Foaled in 1921, he won 9 races in 18 starts as a 2-yr-old. As a 3-yr-old, he won the Kentucky Derby (1924), but did not run in either the Preakness or Belmont. He won the Louisiana, Ohio, and Chicago Derbies. Black Gold was retired to stud, but was sub fertile. Siring 1 colt (killed by lightning strike) in three seasons. At the age of 6, he was returned to the racetrack. He started 4 more times without a win. On Jan 18, 1928, the 7-yr-old started in the Salome Purse at the New Orleans Fair Grounds. In the stretch, he broke down and finished the race on 3 legs. He was euthanized at the track. Black Gold was buried in the infield of the Fair Grounds close to the 16th pole. He was elected to the National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame in 1989.
