Breeder: Charles Pelham Hip was a notable broodmare sire. Hip Mare produced the King's Plate winner, Sampson (b c 1745 Blaze), who sired the first St. Leger winner, Allabaculia (br f 1773), and the good stallion, Engineer (b c 1756), who numbered Mambrino (gr c 1768) among his offspring. His death is unknown and if he ever raced. Full brother to top class racehorse Brocklesby Betty (1716 King's Plate [mares] Hambleton, 1717 King's Plate [mares] Newmarket and King's Plate Newmarket, 1718 King's Plate Newmarket, to Brocklesby (1715 King's Plate York); and to Long Megg (1716 King's Plate [mares] Newmarket) Sired a number of mares which bred on, including an unnamed mare which is dam of Sampson - winner of six King's Plates and sire of high class racehorse Engineer (the sire of top class racehorse Mambrino) and Allabaculia, the winner of the inaugural running of the St Leger in 1776; and Ringtail Galloway, grandam of outstanding racehorse Atlas (1758 King's Plates York, Lincoln, Newmarket, 1759 King's Plate Newmarket, Jockey Club Plate)
