DILLON HALL C, STANDARDBRED, 1932
| Color: br Height: (USA)
Bred by H. Burgoyne.
Foaled 1932, Kentucky. Dillon Hall, the sire of Acropolis (one of his first crop) and Snowflake, was imported to New Zealand by Mr and Mrs George Youngson of gore as a seven-year-old in 1939. He represented world class, boasting a 2:00 mark taken at four years.
Dillon Hall was by a Peter the Great horse, The Laurel Hall, a success in the United States before being exported to Italy, where he was a popular sire. The Italians also bought The Laurel Hall’s record-holding son Prince Hall. It was his son Medoro – sold to New Zealand because he sire too many pacers – who started Noel Simpson on his way to becoming Australasia’s biggest and most influential standardbred breeder of recent times.
The dam of Dillon Hall, Margaret Dillon (by Axworthy’s son Dillon Axworthy), was the champion pacing mare in America from 1922, when she recorded 1:58 ¾, until 1938. She was from Margaret Primo, a Peter the Great mare from Margaret O., whose dam, Marguerite A., was a full sister to Axworthy. Thus Dillon Hall was rich in what was for many years called the ‘golden cross’, that of Peter the Great and Axworthy.
Dillon Hall, who stood 15 season in New Zealand, sire 410 winners, only 10 of them trotters, who won a total of 1507 races in New Zealand. He was five times New Zealand’s leading sire between 1948 and 1956, and in the top three for a remarkable 13 successive seasons. And he was five times leading New Zealand broodmare sire, offspring of Dillon Hall mares including more than 550 individual winners.
Among Dillon Hall’s big winners were Chamfer (who won the 1950 new Zealand Cup and 13 other races and was leading Australian sire of individual winners seven successive times from 1962/63 to 1968/69); Our Roger (who won the 1955 New Zealand Cup and 14 other races for £15,000); Maori Home (17 wins and £18,500); Parawa Derby (15 wins and £16,000); Blue Mist (14 wins and a world record 3:03 1/5 for a mile and a half); Dragoman (12 wins), and the grand mares Lady Averil and Maida Dillon.
There were many others, including a few trotters (headed by Cabra and Swanee River), who reached top class or the fringe of it. Offspring of Dillon Hall mares have included such international pacing stars as Smoke Cloud, Robin Dundee and Orbiter, 1958 Interdominion Champion Free Hall, brilliant New Zealand pacer Sun Chief, Stewart Hanover ($328,358) and Bramble Hall ($215,809). Apart from Chamfer other Dillon Hall sons to succeed as sires included Gentry, First Lord, Collaborate and Bruce Hall.
