Raised at Sledmere Stud, Doncaster was sold at auction for 950 guineas to Mr. James Merry. As a three-year-old, Doncaster won the Derby, finished third in the Grand Prix in Paris, was beaten by a head in the St. Leger, and finished his season second in the Newmarket Derby. As a four-year-old, he placed second in a dead heat with Flageolet in the Ascot Gold Cup, and won the Goodwood Cup. As a five-year-old, he won both the Ascot Gold Cup and the Alexandra Plate, amazingly within two days of each other. Empress Elisabeth of Austria purchased Doncaster for 5000 pounds, and he lived at her Kisber Stud until his death at the age of 22.
