Pole Position, sire of several Canadian stakes winners, dies at 28: Two-time Grade 2 winner and stallion Pole Position was euthanized on May 25 at Justanother Farm in Edmonton, Alberta, where the 28-year-old sire stood for $1,514. Campaigned by Eldorado Stables, the chestnut son of Draft Card ended his racing career with 16 wins in 35 starts and earned $507,402. Among his 11 stakes wins were the 1979 San Felipe Handicap (G2) and the 1980 John B. Campbell Handicap (G2). At stud, Pole Position sired 176 winners from 237 starters, including prolific stakes winners Position Leader, who retired after five seasons with seven stakes wins and $485,291 in earnings, and Canadian Grade 3 winner Code Name Fred, who is in his sixth season of racing with 14 wins in 43 starts and earnings of $422,109. Pole Position has 305 foals in 22 crops, including 295 foals in 21 crops of racing age.
